A free form swimming pool can add drama to an otherwise drab area of landscaping. This swimming pool picture shows how unconventional curves and the use of a mixture of rough and smooth tiles and stones can create a one of a kind swimming pool.

The right foreground of the pool picture shows the hot tub area that uses the conventional circular shape that is often found in swimming pool and hot tub setups. What stands this pool area apart is that the designer took the same curved stone shapes of the tub and used them to create another series of flowing curves for the swimming pool itself. The edges of the pool between the level of the water and the smooth tile are formed from small, rectangular rough-hewn stones. With so much of drama of the swimming pool provided by the rock work, very little landscaping is needed. The one plant in the urn is the only visible landscape feature and is hardly noticeable compared to the striking features of the pool.

What this swimming pool picture doesn’t show is the seating area or other features of the pool. But considering the architecture and design visible in the freeform pool picture, the unseen elements of the swimming pool are probably just as striking.
